Continuing to reflect on my amazing African safari group trip, I wanted to share some tidbits to help you in planning your safari adventure based on my experience!

1. Pick the Right Season

The time of year you go can really shape your experience.

  • Dry season (May to October): Wildlife is easier to spot since animals gather around limited water sources, and there’s less greenery to block your view. This is also peak season, so expect higher prices and more tourists.
  • Wet season (November to April): The landscape is lush and beautiful, and there are fewer crowds. You’ll see unique sights, like hippos out of the water, and animals at watering holes throughout the bush. But thick vegetation can make spotting wildlife trickier when animals are trying to rest or hide in the bush.

2. Know Which Animals You Want to See

Different locations offer different wildlife highlights. If there’s a specific animal you’re hoping to see, pick your destination accordingly:

  • Lions – Highest population in Tanzania
  • Leopards – Most commonly seen in South Africa
  • Rhinos – Best spotted in South Africa
  • Elephants – Large herds in Botswana’s Chobe National Park and Kenya’s Amboseli National Park

3. Health Considerations

I wish I had known about this before our trip! As a couple planning to start a family, we didn’t realize that visiting malaria-prone areas meant we’d have to wait at least six months after returning before trying to conceive. Malaria can stay dormant in your body, and doctors recommend taking this precaution to avoid potential complications. If you’re in the same boat, it’s something to keep in mind before booking your safari!

Also, check in with a travel clinic to get the necessary vaccines and medications, including (but not limited to): Yellow fever, Typhoid, Hepatitis A, Malaria pills

4. How Long to Stay at Each Lodge

A good rule of thumb is three nights per lodge. This gives you enough time to enjoy a full day of game drives between the arrival and departure dates so you don’t feel  rushed. Plus it allows you to experience a variety of different lodges, game reserves / national parks. You’ll also get to see a wider range of landscapes and wildlife!

5. Be Ready for Early Mornings

Game drives start early—like 5 AM early! Wildlife is most active in the morning, so if you’re not an early riser, be prepared for an adjustment. You can skip a drive to sleep in, but let’s be real—you might regret it when you hear about what everyone else saw! There are also afternoon drives too, so basically a jam packed day full of sightings!

6. Decide on Your Lodge Style

Safari accommodations range from budget-friendly to ultra-luxurious. Think about what level of comfort you’re looking for. Whatever your travel style preferences are, there is an option out there for you.

  • 3, 4, or 5-star lodges – From cozy to high-end luxury
  • Glamping – A great mix of adventure and comfort

7. Pack the Right Gear

A few must-haves will make your trip much more comfortable:

  • Insect repellent clothing, spray, and lotion
  • High-SPF sunblock, a hat, and a neck gaiter
  • A lightweight raincoat for unexpected showers

A safari is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, and a little planning goes a long way in making it unforgettable. Need help planning your perfect safari? Reach out to me at samantha@vs1travels.com with any questions you may have and/or fill out this inquiry form to get started!
