During my travels, I stayed aboard the Avalon Passion during the ASTA river cruise expo, enjoyed a post-expo cruise on AmaWaterways‘ AmaLea, and even had the pleasure of cruising with my family as a guest on the Viking Jarl. Across these experiences, the warmth and professionalism of the staff—from the bartender to the housekeeping crew—truly made each trip memorable.

Food is a highlight on every river cruise. I delighted in fantastic meals featuring three course lunches and dinners showcasing local and international flavors. Across many lines, beer and wine were generously included during lunch and dinner, enhancing the dining experience with perfect pairings. I definitely did NOT go hungry.
From AmaWaterways and Viking Cruises’ festive German beer and sausage party—where the staff dressed up to make the night special—to the elegant dining rooms aboard Uniworld’s customized ships, meals are crafted to impress. I absolutely loved Amadeus’ mased potate martini at lunch! Little touches like AmaLea’s nightly turndown chocolates made each evening’s end a sweet celebration.
🌍 Excursions Tailored to Your Interests
Onboard activities and shore excursions shape your river cruise adventure. Depending on the cruise line, some excursions are included while others can be added for a fee, offering flexibility and a range of choices from cultural tours to active explorations.
For AmaWaterways, all shore excursions are included. While I was onboard, I tried out all of the active options which included various hiking and biking choices. One of my favorites was a relaxing bike ride to the Roman-inspired Walhalla Temple in Germany!
Viking Cruises, includes one city tour at each port and options to choose alternate activities for an additional Cost. In addition, Viking provides informative port talks that you can stream right into your suite via Viking TV, helping you delve deeper into the history and culture of each port!Â
